Analysis
This is the now the 4th round of Air France/KLM FlyingBlue’s new program for promo awards. They used to publish lists every 2 months, the booking period started immediately and would be valid for appx 2 months. The new plan is that they are publishing new lists every month but the available dates will be 2 months out for a period of 2 months. They promise “more availability” and a “greater choice of routes”–and this current list is looking pretty good and backs up this claim.
The first few rounds were pretty weak with only 15-25 cities and only economy award space available. The last list for the July/August period has probably been the best yet, with 50+ destinations and a lot of 50% off business class space, making it a very tough act to follow. This current round has about 35 destinations with about half priced at the 50% off rate.
Here’s an example flight from Houston-IAH to Athens-ATH in September:
Outbound availability is great
The return availability isn’t as good but still works
Booking this 7-day visit to Athens in KLM/Air France economy class will only cost you 25,500 + $312 in taxes/fuel surcharge. This yields a return of (using the handy Weekend Blitz Award Calculator):
2.22 cents/mile = an OK return on FlyingBlue/AMEX points
Don’t forget:

- “Reservations must be made exclusively on www.airfrance.com or www.klm.com (except for bookings for children, infants and minors, who are not authorized to book an award on the website).”

BOTTOM LINE: While this list isn’t as good as the last one that had tons of business class space, it certainly gets the job done by allowing you to fly from Houston to (just about) ANYWHERE in Europe for only 25,000 miles roundtrip + $200-$350 in taxes. This makes it a great deal in my book.
