Let’s say you wanted to head to Europe this winter to ski the Swiss or French Alps for a few days:

You can easily book a flight from Washington-IAD, Houston-IAH, Los Angeles-LAX or New York-JFK in Jan/Feb for a quick trip. Here’s a sample booking from Washington-IAD:

When you check Air France FlyingBlue there are plenty of dates available:

This booking from Washington-IAD to Geneva-GVA will cost 25,000 miles + $245.77

This returns a value of:

This example booking saves you ~$950 by using just 25,000 Air France/KLM Flying Blue miles for a roundtrip economy ticket. This is a great value for your miles, yielding a return of 2.89 cents/mile.

If you wanted to take advantage this deal using Business Class, you could book a flight from Chicago-ORD to Europe for just 62,500 miles round-trip. Here’s an example booking from Chicago to Geneva in mid-February:

The cheapest carrier in Business class is Turkish Airlines for $3,700–presumably, this is the flight you would book if you were paying cash.

This returns a value of around 4.5 cents/mile:

BOTTOM LINE: This is one of the more expansive lists for 50% off award travel from the US to Europe in recent months. You might not normally think of Europe as a good destination for travel in Jan/Feb, but there are many options to ski and a lot of the cities in the Mediterranean (Greece, Croatia, Israel etc…) should be rather pleasant destinations.
