McCown and I are working on researching a trip to Myanmar for sometime in 2015 and have been scouring the internet trying to learn all that we can about how to get there, what to see, where to stay, etc… We’ll have a few points related to our Myanmar trip planning over the next few weeks, but, first of all: What’s the best way to get to Myanmar using miles or points from North America?
There are essentially 3 major international [...]
United updated its award chart effective February 3, 2014 with a number of bad changes. It essentially gutted the redemption amounts for business and first class partner awards (i.e. the cost of a First Class flight from the U.S. to Europe in Lufthansa First increased by 85,000 miles, from 135,000 to 220,000 miles). From that point of view, the economy award chart looked relatively unscathed albeit almost all of the changes were negative. Here’s a quick recap of the ECONOMY CLASS updates:
U.S. –> Hawaii: A 5,000 mile increase from 40k miles to 45k miles U.S. –> Middle East (Egypt, Israel, UAE etc…): A 5,000 mile increase from 80k miles to 85k [...]Turkish Airlines, a Star Alliance member, just launched a new route from Istanbul Atatürk Airport (IST) to Bordeaux–Mérignac Airport (BOD).
The new route is scheduled to be flown 4x per week: Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
Why do you care? Because this route opens up more possibilities for booking Star Alliance awards, namely United Mileage Plus awards. And, as with most new routes, the award availability is excellent with 2+ economy seats still open on nearly every single flight going 9 months out:

Valentine’s Day is on Friday and it’s the season where just about every hotel chain, airline and credit card shopping portal teams up with the various flower companies for some pretty huge points earning potential. Always keep in mind that they can afford to pay out the large bonus miles/points because their markup is usually huge. For example, a dozen roses from one of the following companies will cost you around $39-$49 + tax + delivery fees whereas you can usually get the same dozen roses from a local florist or even just Costco for $10-$20 + tax! But, here are some ideas on how to make sure that you’re earning a ton of points while getting a gift for that [...]
